Agriculture exerts a considerable influence on the environment, both positive and negative. It currently accounts for approximately half of the land area of the EU-27, and the cultivation needed to achieve its primary purpose – the production of materials for food, fibre and fuel – has impacts on the functioning of natural systems and the availability of natural resources.
